What to Expect at Your First Psychiatry Appointment
Starting therapy or psychiatry can feel like a big step, and we know it can also feel a little intimidating. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, curious, or unsure, it’s completely normal to have questions about what to expect. At Mynd Works Psychiatry, we’re here to make your first psychiatry appointment feel less clinical and more like the beginning of a trusted partnership.
A Conversation, Not a Judgment
Your first visit with us is all about you. There’s no pressure to have the perfect words or to explain everything flawlessly. We begin with a genuine conversation about your current concerns, symptoms, and goals. You’ll have the chance to share your experiences, what’s been working for you, what hasn’t, and what you’re hoping to feel better about.
This is not a rushed or checklist-style appointment. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard. We know that mental health looks different for everyone, and your voice matters from the very first moment.
What Happens During a Mental Health Intake
A mental health intake is the foundation for building your personalized care plan. During this initial appointment, we’ll cover several areas so we can get a full picture of your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Here’s what we may include:
1. Symptom & History Review
We’ll talk through your current symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, or focus issues), your mental health history, medical conditions, and any previous treatments you’ve tried.
2. Medication Evaluation
If you’re currently taking medication or have tried medication in the past, we’ll review how it worked for you, any side effects, and your preferences moving forward. Some patients want to avoid medication, while others want to explore new options. Either way, your comfort comes first.
3. Genetic Testing (Optional)
For those who are open to it, we may recommend genetic testing next (after your evaluation) to understand how your body metabolizes medications. This helps us create a more precise treatment strategy and avoid unnecessary trial and error.
4. Functional Medicine Screening
Because mental health is deeply connected to physical health, we may also explore your nutrition, gut health, sleep, and hormone balance. Functional medicine nutrition allows us to take a root-cause approach to your care, especially if you’re dealing with chronic fatigue, brain fog, or mood swings.
5. Follow-up Appointments
All psychiatric patients will have follow-up appointments to track progress and make any necessary adjustments. If you are prescribed medication, we will also schedule follow-ups for your medication management. Most psychiatry services come with two follow-ups, and functional medicine nutrition can either be 2 or 4 follow-up appointments. If you are a VIP concierge patient, we offer unlimited follow-up appointments as well as direct access to your provider.
Leave with a Plan And a Partner
By the end of your first psychiatry appointment, you’ll walk away with more than just an assessment you’ll have a personalized care plan designed around your needs and preferences. You will know what is coming next and who you will be working with. This might include:
- A follow-up appointment scheduled
- Recommendations for medication, supplements, or nutrition
- Therapy referrals
- Lifestyle or mindfulness strategies
- Lab work or testing referrals
More importantly, you’ll know that you’re not navigating this alone. We believe in collaborative care, working with you, not on you. Mynd Works takes an integrative approach, meaning your plan is flexible and evolving with you as you grow and heal.
